Van 29 april tot en met 3 mei staat Rotterdam opnieuw in het teken van hedendaags circus tijdens Circusstad Festival 2026. Circus is van oudsher een plek waar diversiteit floreert; een plek waar iedereen welkom is, ongeacht leeftijd, afkomst, gender of beperking. Die kracht vormt het kloppend hart van deze editie die in het teken staat van vrijheid: VRIJ!<\/em> van geweld, VRIJ!<\/em> om te zijn wie je bent, VRIJ!<\/em> om te denken, te dromen en te doen.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Verwacht voorstellingen die binnenkomen: persoonlijk, virtuoos en soms ronduit onmogelijk. Artiesten mengen het spektakel van circus met theater, dans en nieuwe media en raken thema\u2019s als LGBTQI+, overconsumptie, identiteit en inclusie aan. Verwondering, ontroering en humor gaan hand in hand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

SCUSE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Met SCUSE brengt de Canadese maker Fr\u00e9d\u00e9rique Cournoyer Lessard een nieuwe vorm van circus naar Nederland: \u2018cirque documentaire\u2019 \u2013 documentair circus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this highly original performance, Fr\u00e9d\u00e9rique presents six autobiographical scenes. Personal stories, interviews, archive photos, and film clips are combined with innovative acrobatics in a high aerial ring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fr\u00e9d\u00e9rique takes the audience back to fragments from his childhood and shows how they shaped his ideas about femininity and sexuality. This raises questions about the consequences of a binary upbringing that subtly but consistently distinguishes between boys and girls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SCUSE demonstrates that contemporary circus can be not only spectacular but also impressively tell a story about current social issues. The performance moves the audience, leaves no one unmoved, and resonates long afterward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Spectacle of Herself<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Performancekunstenaar en circusartiest Laura Murphy (UK) combineert luchtacrobatiek, theater, video projectie en creatieve ondertiteling met thema\u2019s als mentale gezondheid in een kwetsbare en diep persoonlijke voorstelling. In A Spectacle of Herself<\/em> wordt onderzocht wat het betekent om ruimte in te nemen, je bloot te geven en gezien te worden, als queer en neurodivers persoon, ten tijde van de spacerace van de 21e eeuw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The viewer embarks on an acrobatic adventure with Laura, constantly shifting identities in ever-changing landscapes, where the artist literally creates an (in)appropriate display of herself. Because in the theater, Laura can express herself in ways that are still considered unacceptable in many spaces. Thus, with her critical and bold style, Laura navigates between personal experience and contemporary politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dat leidt tot een bijzonder unieke, ge\u00ebngageerde, vermakelijke en ook ontroerende voorstelling. Laura is een ontwapenende performer die je niet zo snel zal vergeten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Een adembenemende acrobatische zoektocht naar \u2018je ware zelf\u2019 van de Australische supersterren Gravity & Other Myths. Het wereldberoemde Australische gezelschap Gravity & Other Myths (GOM) keert terug naar Rotterdam! Na hun internationale doorbraak met A Simple Space<\/em> (in 2018 te zien bij Circusstad Festival) presenteren zij nu hun meest gedurfde en veelzijdige voorstelling tot nu toe: The Mirror<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alle remmen gaan los in deze baanbrekende productie vol spectaculaire acrobatiek, meeslepende elektronische muziek, humor en live video verbindingen. Onder leiding van regisseur Darcy Grant vragen de negen performers zich af waar de grens ligt tussen kunst en entertainment. En wat betekent authenticiteit eigenlijk nog in een wereld vol schermen, selfies en permanente zelfprofilering?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the impressive stage design with LED walls, cameras and selfie sticks, GOM's human towers, with acrobats jumping in and out, and the live pop mash-ups sung by singer Megan Drury create an infectious interplay of energy, emotion and visuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

100 artiesten op Circusstad Festival 29 april – 3 mei<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dik honderd circusartiesten worden verwacht in Rotterdam. Uit 22 landen, waaronder Canada, Verenigde Staten, Australi\u00eb, Frankrijk, Oostenrijk, Engeland, Itali\u00eb, Duitsland en Belgi\u00eb \u00e9n Nederland. Zij treden vanaf woensdag 29 april tot en met het weekend (3 mei) op tijdens het jaarlijkse Circusstad Festival, het grootste circusfestival van Nederland, op en rond het Schouwburgplein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Circusstad Festival vindt behalve op het Rotterdamse Schouwburgplein plaats in Theater Rotterdam, oude Luxor Theater, Maaspodium en Codarts Circus Arts. Je loopt zo het vrij toegankelijke Schouwburgplein op voor een terrasje, gratis voorstellingen en workshops. Tickets kun je kopen bij de kassa voor exclusieve voorstellingen in de tenten op het plein of in de theaters vlakbij en elders in de stad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
